Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about watching this charming family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well help usher in that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
