Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
