Our team is verifying video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that purport to show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to check the site of where the images originated was based on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the video.
Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
