The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terror Attack
At least 16 lives perished and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, officials have announced the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to medical facilities.
The victims have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who are known so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member remarked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She told the moments before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still under care, with five in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
