The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Music Superstar and Cultural Icon, Passes Away at Eighty-One Years Old
Global audiences mourns the loss of Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican musician and actor whose captivating vocal talent was instrumental in popularizing the reggae genre across the globe. The artist has died at the age of eighty-one.
“With deep sorrow that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure and subsequent pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am thankful for his family, friends, peers in the arts and colleagues who shared his journey. To all his fans around the world, please know that your encouragement was his motivation throughout his entire professional life … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” The message was also signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.
Cliff gained fame for hits such as “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His upbeat sound and uplifting temperament brought him a large and loyal fanbase.
Beyond his music accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972 drama film The Harder They Come, a role that received critical praise and is considered a landmark of film in Jamaica.
He is among the select few of musicians, alongside Bob Marley and other greats, to be honored with the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
